Cots Island

Coats - an island in the north of the Hudson's Bay, owned by Canada.
Geography
Area 5,498 km². It is part of Kivallik district of Nunavut province. There are no permanent settlements on the island. The relief of the island is lowland, the highest point of the island (185 meters above sea level) is located on the northern, rocky shore, between the Cape Pembroke (Pembroke) and Prefontaine. The northern part of the island is composed of Precambrian metamorphic rocks, the southern part is Paleozoic sedimentary rocks (limestone, sandstone). Wetlands predominate in the south.

Since 1920, a reserve has been located on the island, and the local reindeer herds have been protected. When a caribou population was destroyed on the neighboring island of Southampton, the Cots deer were used to restore it. On the rocks of the northern part of the island breed short-haired cairo (about 30 thousand individuals). Walruses live on nearby small islands, too.
History
The island is named after William Coats, Captain of the Hudson's Bay Company. From 1727 to 1751 he periodically visited the territory. In the 1860s, American whalers engaged in fishing here, it was confirmed that Cots is an island. From August 1920 to August 1924, the Hudson's Bay Company Factor was located on the island. At that time, as many Inuit families lived there, some of them sailed there by boat from Baffin Island.
