Found in tropical forests of Southeast Asia Palaeophanes, 4 species, Australia Notiophanes fuscata and in Central and South America except the islands of the West Indies; Arrhenophanes, Cnissostages, Dysoptus, 21 species1

Small mole-shaped butterflies, front wings 4–33 mm long. Eyes large, occupying the entire lateral surface of the head; no ocelli The length of the antennae is 0.3–0.6 of the length of the fore wings, they consist of 30–61 segments The antennae of the females are filiform, and in males the feathery larvae are known for only a few South American species that develop inside the fungi Polyporus, Polypore, wood-destroying Caterpillars are up to 30 mm long, whitish with a yellow-brown head1 - Systematicspost - 5 genera and about 26 species1
