McCullough was born and raised in Pittsburgh, received a degree in English literature at Yale University, he wrote his first book, The Johnstown Flood, in 1968, then eight more, some of them about Harry Truman, John Adams and the Brooklyn Bridge, McCullough was an announcer in several documentaries, for example, the Favorite movie and the American Experienceen television program
