Jehonia (Heb. יְכָנְיָה, יְהוֹיָכִין, Yehoyahin "appointed by God"), the son of Jehoiakim, is one of the last kings of Judah. Dates of government: December 9, 598 BC e. - March 16, 597 BC e. He reigned only 3 months and 10 days (2 Kings 24: 8).
Jehonia ascended the throne in the midst of an uprising against Babylonia at the age of 18. In the winter of 598/97 BC e. he surrendered Jerusalem to the Babylonians besieging the city. Nebuchadnezzar sent him along with his mother, family, associates, slaves and 10 thousand Jewish captives - soldiers and craftsmen - to Babylonia (2 Kings 24:12 et seq.) And seated his uncle Zedekiah (Tsidkiyahu) on the throne.
Four times mentioned in the Babylonian palace records of the monthly issuance of food relating to the reign of Nebuchadnezzar. One of them is dated 592 BC. e. (The 13th year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar and the 6th year of the exile of Jehonia). In these records, Jehonia is called the “king of Judea,” which indicates that he was considered a captive ruler. [1]
Jehonia languished in prison for 37 years, then was released and was given an honorary position at court. He died in Babylon. See 2 Kings. 24 and 25, as well as in the book of Chronicles.
The family of Jehonia led the community of Jewish exiles in Babylonia, and his descendants led those who, with the permission of the Persian king Cyrus, returned to their homeland in 538 BC. e. - Notes
