Wells County is a county located in the US state of North Dakota As of the 2010 census, the population was 4,2071 Its county seat is Fessenden2 The county was created by the 1872-73 territorial legislature and named after Edward Payson Wells, a Jamestown banker, early promoter of the James River Valley, and member of the legislature in 1881 The county government was organized on August 28, 18843 The county seat was Sykeston from 1884 to 1894, after which time Fessenden was given the title4

The center of population of North Dakota is located in the extreme southeastern corner of Wells County, about 9 miles 14 km southeast of Sykeston5

According to the US Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,290 square miles 3,300 km2, of which 1,271 square miles 3,290 km2 is land and 19 square miles 49 km2 15% is water6

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,102 people, 2,215 households, and 1,453 families residing in the county The population density was 4 inhabitants per square mile 2/km2 There were 2,643 housing units at an average density of 2 per square mile 1/km2 The racial makeup of the county was 9912% White, 014% Black or African American, 024% Native American, 024% Asian, 002% from other races, and 025% from two or more races 029% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race 595% were of German and 241% Norwegian ancestry

There were 2,215 households out of which 2540% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 5860% were married couples living together, 480% had a female householder with no husband present, and 3440% were non-families 3260% of all households were made up of individuals and 1860% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 225 and the average family size was 285

In the county, the population was spread out with 2250% under the age of 18, 460% from 18 to 24, 2270% from 25 to 44, 2420% from 45 to 64, and 2600% who were 65 years of age or older The median age was 45 years For every 100 females there were 9660 males For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 9400 males

The median income for a household in the county was $31,894, and the median income for a family was $39,284 Males had a median income of $27,277 versus $16,810 for females The per capita income for the county was $17,932 About 1030% of families and 1350% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1110% of those under age 18 and 1790% of those age 65 or over

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 4,207 people, 1,943 households, and 1,223 families residing in the county13 The population density was 33 inhabitants per square mile 13/km2 There were 2,481 housing units at an average density of 20 per square mile 077/km214 The racial makeup of the county was 989% white, 03% American Indian, 01% black or African American, 01% Asian, 00% from other races, and 06% from two or more races Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 05% of the population13 In terms of ancestry, 659% were German, 259% were Norwegian, 67% were Irish, and 18% were American15

Of the 1,943 households, 197% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 541% were married couples living together, 56% had a female householder with no husband present, 371% were non-families, and 343% of all households were made up of individuals The average household size was 210 and the average family size was 267 The median age was 515 years13

The median income for a household in the county was $40,136 and the median income for a family was $52,400 Males had a median income of $38,442 versus $25,597 for females The per capita income for the county was $23,531 About 61% of families and 103% of the population were below the poverty line, including 125% of those under age 18 and 171% of those age 65 or over16
