Velva is a city in McHenry County, North Dakota, United States The population was 1,084 at the 2010 census5 It is part of the Minot Micropolitan Statistical Area Velva was founded in 1897 and is the birthplace of television correspondent Eric Sevareid

Velva became a city in 1836 with the arrival of the Minneapolis, St Paul and Sault Ste Marie Railroad into the area Velva received its official city rights in 19056

As of the census2 of 2010, there were 1,084 people, 452 households and 277 families residing in the city The population density was 1,3060 inhabitants per square mile 5042/km2 There were 493 housing units at an average density of 5940 per square mile 2293/km2 The racial makeup of the city was 987% White, 04% Native American, 01% Asian, 02% from other races, and 06% from two or more races Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14% of the population

There were 452 households of which 263% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 489% were married couples living together, 91% had a female householder with no husband present, 33% had a male householder with no wife present, and 387% were non-families 347% of all households were made up of individuals and 181% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 229 and the average family size was 292

The average age in the city was 427 years 244% of residents were under the age of 18; 56% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 227% were from 25 to 44; 241% were from 45 to 64; and 232% were 65 years of age or older The gender makeup of the city was 471% male and 529% female

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,049 people, 436 households, and 275 families residing in the city The population density was 1,3597 people per square mile 5260/km² There were 483 housing units at an average density of 6261 per square mile 2422/km² The racial makeup of the city was 9933% White, 010% African American, 019% Native American, and 038% from two or more races Hispanic or Latino of any race were 048% of the population

There were 436 households out of which 312% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 502% were married couples living together, 85% had a female householder with no husband present, and 369% were non-families 344% of all households were made up of individuals and 206% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 230 and the average family size was 297

In the city, the population was spread out with 256% under the age of 18, 51% from 18 to 24, 236% from 25 to 44, 196% from 45 to 64, and 260% who were 65 years of age or older The median age was 42 years For every 100 females there were 890 males For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 797 males
