Tioga was founded in 1902 and named by settlers from Tioga, New York The population of the city increased dramatically in the 1950s following the discovery of oil nearby in the Williston Basin6

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 139 square miles 360 km2, of which, 131 square miles 339 km2 is land and 008 square miles 021 km2 is water1

As of the census2 of 2010, there were 1,230 people, 542 households, and 323 families residing in the city The population density was 9389 inhabitants per square mile 3625/km2 There were 619 housing units at an average density of 4725 per square mile 1824/km2 The racial makeup of the city was 969% White, 01% African American, 05% Native American, 06% Asian, 01% Pacific Islander, 02% from other races, and 17% from two or more races Hispanic or Latino of any race were 07% of the population

There were 542 households of which 247% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 482% were married couples living together, 61% had a female householder with no husband present, 54% had a male householder with no wife present, and 404% were non-families 345% of all households were made up of individuals and 168% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 216 and the average family size was 272

The median age in the city was 474 years 185% of residents were under the age of 18; 71% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 215% were from 25 to 44; 276% were from 45 to 64; and 254% were 65 years of age or older The gender makeup of the city was 508% male and 492% female

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,125 people, 490 households, and 311 families residing in the city The population density was 8561 people per square mile 3316/km² There were 569 housing units at an average density of 4330 per square mile 1677/km² The racial makeup of the city was 9742% White, 018% black, 089% Indigenous American, 018% from other races, and 133% from two or more races Hispanic or Latino of any race were 009% of the population

There were 490 households out of which 255% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 545% were married couples living together, 63% had a female householder with no husband present, and 365% were non-families 349% of all households were made up of individuals and 237% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 222 and the average family size was 286

In the city, the population was spread out with 225% under the age of 18, 42% from 18 to 24, 234% from 25 to 44, 235% from 45 to 64, and 265% who were 65 years of age or older The median age was 45 years For every 100 females there were 860 males For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 847 males
