According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 183 square miles 474 km2, of which, 182 square miles 471 km2 is land and 001 square miles 003 km2 is water1

Stanley is situated on the Bakken Formation, which encompasses northwestern North Dakota, northeastern Montana, and southern Saskatchewan, Canada The formation is a rich source of oil, first discovered in the 1950s Until the late 2000s the cost of oil extraction was too high to retrieve the oil profitably With new technologies in oilfield production and the rising price of oil, the field has now become economically viable The field may be the largest producing onshore field in the Continental United States outside of Texas and California, with the US Geological Survey estimating that it contains between 3 billion and 4,300,000,000 barrels 680,000,000 m3 of oil, sixth overall in the lower 48, and could hold as much as 200 billion barrels 32×10^9 m3 of oil9

As of the census2 of 2010, there were 1,458 people, 629 households, and 362 families residing in the city The population density was 8011 inhabitants per square mile 3093/km2 There were 718 housing units at an average density of 3945 per square mile 1523/km2 The racial makeup of the city was 974% White, 02% African American, 05% Native American, 05% Asian, 06% from other races, and 08% from two or more races Hispanic or Latino of any race were 39% of the population

There were 629 households of which 240% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 475% were married couples living together, 57% had a female householder with no husband present, 43% had a male householder with no wife present, and 424% were non-families 358% of all households were made up of individuals and 165% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 221 and the average family size was 289

The median age in the city was 441 years 21% of residents were under the age of 18; 65% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 232% were from 25 to 44; 265% were from 45 to 64; and 229% were 65 years of age or older The gender makeup of the city was 502% male and 498% female

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,279 people, 576 households, and 332 families residing in the city The population density was 7403 people per square mile 2854/km² There were 664 housing units at an average density of 3843 per square mile 1482/km² The racial makeup of the city was 9898% White, 055% Native American, 031% Asian, 008% Pacific Islander, and 008% from two or more races Hispanic or Latino of any race were 055% of the population

There were 576 households out of which 240% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 481% were married couples living together, 68% had a female householder with no husband present, and 422% were non-families 398% of all households were made up of individuals and 240% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 212 and the average family size was 284
