Rolla was laid out in 18887 The name Rolla was most likely derived from Rolette, the county in which the city is located8 A post office has been in operation in Rolla since 18889 The city was incorporated in 19077

As of the census2 of 2010, there were 1,280 people, 563 households, and 321 families residing in the city The population density was 8951 inhabitants per square mile 3456/km2 There were 619 housing units at an average density of 4329 per square mile 1671/km2 The racial makeup of the city was 541% White, 01% African American, 409% Native American, 06% Asian, 02% from other races, and 42% from two or more races Hispanic or Latino of any race were 18% of the population

There were 563 households of which 302% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 353% were married couples living together, 167% had a female householder with no husband present, 50% had a male householder with no wife present, and 430% were non-families 403% of all households were made up of individuals and 188% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 224 and the average family size was 298

The median age in the city was 365 years 276% of residents were under the age of 18; 83% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 221% were from 25 to 44; 249% were from 45 to 64; and 171% were 65 years of age or older The gender makeup of the city was 473% male and 527% female

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,417 people, 599 households, and 357 families residing in the city The population density was 1,1412 people per square mile 4412/km2 There were 656 housing units at an average density of 5283 per square mile 2043/km2 The racial makeup of the city was 6683% White, 007% African American, 2844% Native American, 056% Asian, 021% from other races, and 388% from two or more races Hispanic or Latino of any race were 064% of the population 204% were of German, 158% Norwegian, 92% Finnish and 73% French ancestry according to Census 2000 965% spoke English, 14% Finnish and 14% Spanish as their first language

There were 599 households out of which 312% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 446% were married couples living together, 137% had a female householder with no husband present, and 404% were non-families 364% of all households were made up of individuals and 215% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 234 and the average family size was 310

In the city, the population was spread out with 278% under the age of 18, 73% from 18 to 24, 241% from 25 to 44, 217% from 45 to 64, and 191% who were 65 years of age or older The median age was 39 years For every 100 females there were 847 males For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 807 males

The median income for a household in the city was $32,222, and the median income for a family was $41,550 Males had a median income of $25,096 versus $20,391 for females The per capita income for the city was $16,614 About 160% of families and 194% of the population were below the poverty line, including 356% of those under age 18 and 106% of those age 65 or over
