As of the census of 2000, there were 5,890 people, 2,350 households, and 1,560 families residing in the county The population density was 7 people per square mile 3/km² There were 2,604 housing units at an average density of 3 per square mile 1/km² The racial makeup of the county was 9793% White, 019% Black or African American, 032% Native American, 025% Asian, 037% from other races, and 093% from two or more races 081% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race 395% were of German and 349% Norwegian ancestry

There were 2,350 households out of which 3100% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 5810% were married couples living together, 510% had a female householder with no husband present, and 3360% were non-families 3070% of all households were made up of individuals and 1550% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 239 and the average family size was 301

In the county, the population was spread out with 2500% under the age of 18, 590% from 18 to 24, 2540% from 25 to 44, 2240% from 45 to 64, and 2120% who were 65 years of age or older The median age was 41 years For every 100 females there were 10620 males For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 10580 males

The median income for a household in the county was $37,672, and the median income for a family was $44,865 Males had a median income of $35,023 versus $18,772 for females The per capita income for the county was $18,219 About 630% of families and 880% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1070% of those under age 18 and 820% of those age 65 or over

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 5,457 people, 2,310 households, and 1,466 families residing in the county11 The population density was 63 inhabitants per square mile 24/km2 There were 2,656 housing units at an average density of 31 per square mile 12/km212 The racial makeup of the county was 978% white, 04% Asian, 04% American Indian, 03% black or African American, 01% Pacific islander, 01% from other races, and 09% from two or more races Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 12% of the population11 In terms of ancestry, 542% were German, 366% were Norwegian, 90% were Irish, 69% were Swedish, 51% were English, and 16% were American13

Of the 2,310 households, 278% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 548% were married couples living together, 54% had a female householder with no husband present, 365% were non-families, and 329% of all households were made up of individuals The average household size was 228 and the average family size was 289 The median age was 452 years11

The median income for a household in the county was $46,044 and the median income for a family was $59,973 Males had a median income of $42,380 versus $28,209 for females The per capita income for the county was $21,995 About 75% of families and 94% of the population were below the poverty line, including 132% of those under age 18 and 116% of those age 65 or over14
