Putnam County is a county located in the US state of Ohio As of the 2010 census, the population was 34,4991 Its county seat is Ottawa2 The county was created in 1820 and later organized in 18343 Its name is in honor of Israel Putnam, who was a hero in the French and Indian War and a general in the American Revolutionary War4

According to the US Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 484 square miles 1,250 km2, of which 483 square miles 1,250 km2 is land and 18 square miles 47 km2 04% is water5

As of the census11 of 2000, there were 34,726 people, 12,200 households, and 9,308 families residing in the county The population density was 72 people per square mile 28/km² There were 12,753 housing units at an average density of 26 per square mile 10/km² The racial makeup of the county was 9626% White, 017% Black or African American, 015% Native American, 018% Asian, 001% Pacific Islander, 251% from other races, and 073% from two or more races 438% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race

There were 12,200 households out of which 3920% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 6490% were married couples living together, 740% had a female householder with no husband present, and 2370% were non-families 2130% of all households were made up of individuals and 1050% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 281 and the average family size was 329

In the county, the population was spread out with 2970% under the age of 18, 830% from 18 to 24, 2810% from 25 to 44, 2060% from 45 to 64, and 1330% who were 65 years of age or older The median age was 35 years For every 100 females there were 9850 males For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 9700 males

The median income for a household in the county was $46,426, and the median income for a family was $52,859 Males had a median income of $36,548 versus $23,963 for females The per capita income for the county was $18,680 About 400% of families and 560% of the population were below the poverty line, including 640% of those under age 18 and 980% of those age 65 or over

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 34,499 people, 12,872 households, and 9,556 families residing in the county12 The population density was 715 inhabitants per square mile 276/km2 There were 13,731 housing units at an average density of 285 per square mile 110/km213 The racial makeup of the county was 957% white, 03% black or African American, 02% Asian, 02% American Indian, 27% from other races, and 09% from two or more races Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 55% of the population12 In terms of ancestry, 656% were German, 78% were Irish, and 73% were American14

Of the 12,872 households, 350% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 629% were married couples living together, 74% had a female householder with no husband present, 258% were non-families, and 225% of all households were made up of individuals The average household size was 266 and the average family size was 313 The median age was 390 years12

The median income for a household in the county was $56,573 and the median income for a family was $65,882 Males had a median income of $44,417 versus $33,200 for females The per capita income for the county was $24,023 About 58% of families and 71% of the population were below the poverty line, including 98% of those under age 18 and 70% of those age 65 or over15
