Oakes was laid out in 18866 It was named for Thomas F Oakes, a railroad official6 A post office has been in operation in Oakes since 18867 The city was incorporated in 18888

Oakes is located in southeastern North Dakota at 46°8′14″N 98°5′23″W / 4613722°N 9808972°W / 4613722; -9808972 46137249, -980896869 It sits about one mile east of the James river and is the meeting place of several rail lines Because of its rail access, Oakes is home to several major grain elevators that handle large volumes of grain, primarily corn

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 164 square miles 425 km2, all of it land1

As of the census2 of 2010, there were 1,856 people, 807 households, and 476 families residing in the city The population density was 1,1317 inhabitants per square mile 4370/km2 There were 912 housing units at an average density of 5561 per square mile 2147/km2 The racial makeup of the city was 961% White, 05% African American, 03% Native American, 08% Asian, 11% from other races, and 13% from two or more races Hispanic or Latino of any race were 38% of the population

There were 807 households of which 268% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 512% were married couples living together, 45% had a female householder with no husband present, 33% had a male householder with no wife present, and 410% were non-families 369% of all households were made up of individuals and 194% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 219 and the average family size was 289

The median age in the city was 457 years 23% of residents were under the age of 18; 6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 202% were from 25 to 44; 267% were from 45 to 64; and 241% were 65 years of age or older The gender makeup of the city was 481% male and 519% female

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,979 people, 828 households, and 495 families residing in the city The population density was 1,2030 people per square mile 4631/km² There were 908 housing units at an average density of 5520 per square mile 2125/km² The racial makeup of the city was 9727% White, 020% Native American, 101% Asian, 101% from other races, and 051% from two or more races Hispanic or Latino of any race were 258% of the population

There were 828 households out of which 277% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 512% were married couples living together, 52% had a female householder with no husband present, and 402% were non-families 367% of all households were made up of individuals and 200% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 228 and the average family size was 302

In the city, the population was spread out with 248% under the age of 18, 66% from 18 to 24, 230% from 25 to 44, 210% from 45 to 64, and 245% who were 65 years of age or older The median age was 42 years For every 100 females there were 935 males For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 872 males
