Marion County is a county located in the US state of Ohio As of the 2010 census, the population was 66,5011 Its county seat is Marion2 The county was created in 1820 and later organized in 18243 It is named for General Francis "The Swamp Fox" Marion, a South Carolinian officer in the Revolutionary War4

Marion County comprises the Marion, OH Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Columbus-Marion-Zanesville, OH Combined Statistical Area

According to the US Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 404 square miles 1,050 km2, of which 404 square miles 1,050 km2 is land and 04 square miles 10 km2 01% is water5 It is the fifth-smallest county in Ohio by total area

As of the census11 of 2000, there were 66,217 people, 24,578 households, and 17,253 families residing in the county The population density was 164 people per square mile 63/km² There were 26,298 housing units at an average density of 65 per square mile 25/km² The racial makeup of the county was 9210% White, 575% Black or African American, 019% Native American, 052% Asian, 001% Pacific Islander, 049% from other races, and 095% from two or more races 109% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race

There were 24,578 households out of which 3230% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 5450% were married couples living together, 1140% had a female householder with no husband present, and 2980% were non-families 2510% of all households were made up of individuals and 1090% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 250 and the average family size was 298

In the county, the population was spread out with 2450% under the age of 18, 830% from 18 to 24, 3030% from 25 to 44, 2350% from 45 to 64, and 1340% who were 65 years of age or older The median age was 37 years For every 100 females there were 10690 males For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 10710 males

The median income for a household in the county was $38,709, and the median income for a family was $45,297 Males had a median income of $33,179 versus $23,586 for females The per capita income for the county was $18,255 About 740% of families and 970% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1360% of those under age 18 and 550% of those age 65 or over

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 66,501 people, 24,691 households, and 16,837 families residing in the county12 The population density was 1647 inhabitants per square mile 636/km2 There were 27,834 housing units at an average density of 689 per square mile 266/km213 The racial makeup of the county was 911% white, 57% black or African American, 05% Asian, 02% American Indian, 01% Pacific islander, 08% from other races, and 17% from two or more races Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 23% of the population12 In terms of ancestry, 297% were German, 152% were Irish, 147% were American, and 102% were English14

Of the 24,691 households, 318% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 494% were married couples living together, 133% had a female householder with no husband present, 318% were non-families, and 263% of all households were made up of individuals The average household size was 247 and the average family size was 294 The median age was 399 years12

The median income for a household in the county was $40,511 and the median income for a family was $50,900 Males had a median income of $39,741 versus $30,161 for females The per capita income for the county was $19,849 About 131% of families and 173% of the population were below the poverty line, including 246% of those under age 18 and 94% of those age 65 or over15

Marion County is represented by two members of the Ohio House of Representatives, as it is split between the 82nd District and the 83rd District State Representative Jeff McClain is currently serving his second term representing the constituents in the 82nd Ohio House district, and state Representative Dorothy Pelanda is serving the remainder of a two-year term that expires in 2013 on behalf of the 83rd Ohio House district The entirety of Marion County lies in the 26th Ohio Senate District, currently represented by Marion native and Marion Catholic alumnus Dave Burke, who was appointed to the seat in July 2011
