Madras /ˈmædrəs/ MAD-res is a city in Jefferson County, Oregon, United States Originally called "The Basin" after the circular valley the city is in, it is unclear whether Madras was named in 1903 for the cotton fabric called "Madras" that originated in the city of Madras now Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India, or from the name of the city itself5 The population was 6,046 at the 2010 census6 It is the county seat of Jefferson County7

Historyedit

Madras was incorporated as a city in 1911 An Army Air Corps base was built nearby during World War II This airfield now serves as City-County Airport Homesteads approximately 5 miles 8 km north of the city on Agency Plains were based on dryland wheat

GMO incidentedit

In 2003, a Scotts Company large field trial of GMO bentgrass near Madras resulted in pollen spreading the transgene, which is Roundup resistance, over an area of 120 square miles 310 km28 Because the grower could not remove all genetically engineered plants, the US Department of Agriculture fined the grower $500,000 for non-compliance with regulations in 20079

2017 solar eclipseedit

Madras is located very close to the centerline of the path of totality of the Solar eclipse of August 21, 2017 Because it is located in a high desert environment and has consistently clear skies in August, it is considered a prime eclipse viewing location All hotel and motel rooms in the area have been reserved for several years The town is preparing for an influx of about 100,000 visitors for the eclipse10

Sightsedit

Madras is home to the Erickson Aircraft Collection, a privately owned collection of airworthy vintage aircraft The collection is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, 10-511 The Jefferson County Fair has operated since 1934 and is currently located in Madras on Fairgrounds Road Jefferson County Fair Complex The Annual fair takes place in late July each year 12

As of the census of 2010, there were 6,046 people, 2,198 households, and 1,430 families residing in the city The population density was 1,2044 inhabitants per square mile 4650/km2 There were 2,569 housing units at an average density of 5118 per square mile 1976/km2 The racial makeup of the city was 664% White, 07% African American, 69% Native American, 08% Asian, 02% Pacific Islander, 197% from other races, and 54% from two or more races Hispanic or Latino of any race were 385% of the population2

There were 2,198 households of which 412% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 425% were married couples living together, 159% had a female householder with no husband present, 66% had a male householder with no wife present, and 349% were non-families 285% of all households were made up of individuals and 112% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 269 and the average family size was 3312

The median age in the city was 312 years 308% of residents were under the age of 18; 104% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 271% were from 25 to 44; 216% were from 45 to 64; and 103% were 65 years of age or older The gender makeup of the city was 493% male and 507% female2

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,078 people, 1,801 households, and 1,251 families residing in the city The population density was 2,3269 people per square mile 8994/km² There were 1,952 housing units at an average density of 8945 per square mile 3457/km² The racial makeup of the city was 6355% White, 059% African American, 614% Native American, 055% Asian, 035% Pacific Islander, 2456% from other races, and 425% from two or more races Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3574% of the population2

There were 1,801 households out of which 410% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 492% were married couples living together, 129% had a female householder with no husband present, and 305% were non-families 253% of all households were made up of individuals and 92% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 278 and the average family size was 3322

In the city, the population was spread out with 331% under the age of 18, 106% from 18 to 24, 297% from 25 to 44, 161% from 45 to 64, and 105% who were 65 years of age or older The median age was 29 years For every 100 females there were 953 males For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 948 males2

The median income for a household in the city was $29,103, and the median income for a family was $33,275 Males had a median income of $27,656 versus $19,464 for females The per capita income for the city was $12,937 About 152% of families and 196% of the population were below the poverty line, including 263% of those under age 18 and 100% of those age 65 or over2
