Historyedit

Hettinger was founded in 1907 along the Milwaukee Road's transcontinental rail line known as the Pacific Extension The city and its surrounding township were named by popular demand in recognition of Hettinger County, from which Adams County was created in 19078

Geographyedit

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 086 square miles 223 km2, of which 085 square miles 220 km2 is land and 001 square miles 003 km2 is water1

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,307 people, 584 households, and 345 families residing in the city The population density was 1,5566 people per square mile 6008/km² There were 720 housing units at an average density of 8575 per square mile 3309/km² The racial makeup of the city was 9878% White, 015% African American, 038% Native American, 015% Asian, 008% Pacific Islander, 023% from other races, and 023% from two or more races Hispanic or Latino of any race were 038% of the population

There were 584 households out of which 257% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 478% were married couples living together, 86% had a female householder with no husband present, and 408% were non-families 380% of all households were made up of individuals and 226% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 210 and the average family size was 276

In the city, the population was spread out with 217% under the age of 18, 48% from 18 to 24, 219% from 25 to 44, 232% from 45 to 64, and 285% who were 65 years of age or older The median age was 46 years For every 100 females there were 800 males For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 781 males

The median income for a household in the city was $27,689, and the median income for a family was $32,917 Males had a median income of $26,172 versus $19,674 for females The per capita income for the city was $21,148 About 54% of families and 81% of the population were below the poverty line, including 86% of those under age 18 and 137% of those age 65 or over
