Griggs County is a county located in the US state of North Dakota As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,4201 Its county seat is Cooperstown2 The county was founded in 1881 and later organized in 188234 It was named for Alexander Griggs5

According to the US Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 716 square miles 1,850 km2, of which 709 square miles 1,840 km2 is land and 76 square miles 20 km2 11% is water6 It is the third-smallest county in North Dakota by land area and fourth-smallest by total area

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,754 people, 1,178 households, and 781 families residing in the county The population density was 4 people per square mile 2/km² There were 1,521 housing units at an average density of 2 per square mile 1/km² The racial makeup of the county was 9931% White, 022% Native American, 015% Asian, 015% from other races, and 018% from two or more races 040% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race 597% were of Norwegian and 249% German ancestry

There were 1,178 households out of which 2670% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 5930% were married couples living together, 470% had a female householder with no husband present, and 3370% were non-families 3160% of all households were made up of individuals and 1860% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 229 and the average family size was 288

In the county, the population was spread out with 2250% under the age of 18, 490% from 18 to 24, 2110% from 25 to 44, 2580% from 45 to 64, and 2570% who were 65 years of age or older The median age was 46 years For every 100 females there were 9940 males For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 9990 males

The median income for a household in the county was $29,572, and the median income for a family was $38,611 Males had a median income of $26,981 versus $19,327 for females The per capita income for the county was $16,131 About 780% of families and 1010% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1000% of those under age 18 and 1030% of those age 65 or over

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 2,420 people, 1,131 households, and 694 families residing in the county12 The population density was 34 inhabitants per square mile 13/km2 There were 1,461 housing units at an average density of 21 per square mile 081/km213 The racial makeup of the county was 988% white, 03% American Indian, 03% black or African American, 02% Asian, 02% from other races, and 02% from two or more races Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 04% of the population12 In terms of ancestry, 608% were Norwegian, 367% were German, 59% were English, 56% were Swedish, and 12% were American14

Of the 1,131 households, 208% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 539% were married couples living together, 42% had a female householder with no husband present, 386% were non-families, and 363% of all households were made up of individuals The average household size was 210 and the average family size was 270 The median age was 519 years12

The median income for a household in the county was $40,085 and the median income for a family was $51,570 Males had a median income of $33,169 versus $27,038 for females The per capita income for the county was $24,122 About 95% of families and 114% of the population were below the poverty line, including 114% of those under age 18 and 175% of those age 65 or over15
