Carter is located in western Chouteau County at 47°46′53″N 110°57′21″W / 47781252°N 110955800°W / 47781252; -110955800 47781252, -1109558002 It is along US Route 87, which leads northeast 14 miles 23 km to Fort Benton, the county seat, and southwest 26 miles 42 km to Great Falls
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 29 square miles 75 km2, of which 0004 square miles 001 km2, or 014%, is water1

As of the census4 of 2000, there were 62 people, 31 households, and 19 families residing in the CDP The population density was 213 people per square mile 82/km2 There were 34 housing units at an average density of 117 per square mile 45/km2 The racial makeup of the CDP was 10000% White
There were 31 households out of which 129% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 581% were married couples living together, 32% had a female householder with no husband present, and 387% were non-families 323% of all households were made up of individuals and 129% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 200 and the average family size was 242
