Bowman County is a county located in the US state of North Dakota As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,1511 Its county seat is Bowman2

Bowman County was created by the 1883 Dakota Territory legislature but eliminated in 1903 due to a lack of settlement The county was then reestablished in 1907 by a proclamation by Governor John Burke The name comes from Edward M Bowman, member of the territorial House of Representatives during the 1883 session The county government was first organized on July 5, 1907;3 Bowman has always been the county seat4

The US Navy ship USS Bowman County LST-391, a tank landing ship in World War II, was named after this county

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,242 people, 1,358 households, and 890 families residing in the county The population density was 3 people per square mile 1/km² There were 1,596 housing units at an average density of 1 per square mile 1/km² The racial makeup of the county was 9898% White, 003% Black or African American, 015% Native American, 003% Asian, 015% from other races, and 065% from two or more races 068% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race 411% were of German, 281% Norwegian, 53% Irish and 50% Polish ancestry

There were 1,358 households out of which 2950% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 5950% were married couples living together, 410% had a female householder with no husband present, and 3440% were non-families 3150% of all households were made up of individuals and 1720% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older The average household size was 232 and the average family size was 295

In the county, the population was spread out with 2410% under the age of 18, 530% from 18 to 24, 2460% from 25 to 44, 2420% from 45 to 64, and 2180% who were 65 years of age or older The median age was 43 years For every 100 females there were 9460 males For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 9660 males

The median income for a household in the county was $31,906, and the median income for a family was $39,485 Males had a median income of $28,682 versus $17,992 for females The per capita income for the county was $17,662 About 590% of families and 820% of the population were below the poverty line, including 990% of those under age 18 and 1040% of those age 65 or over

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 3,151 people, 1,385 households, and 873 families residing in the county11 The population density was 27 inhabitants per square mile 10/km2 There were 1,683 housing units at an average density of 14 per square mile 054/km212 The racial makeup of the county was 979% white, 06% American Indian, 01% black or African American, 01% Asian, 09% from other races, and 05% from two or more races Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 25% of the population11 In terms of ancestry, 474% were German, 281% were Norwegian, 99% were Irish, 64% were Swedish, 64% were English, 54% were American, and 52% were Polish13

Of the 1,385 households, 256% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 549% were married couples living together, 44% had a female householder with no husband present, 370% were non-families, and 329% of all households were made up of individuals The average household size was 222 and the average family size was 282 The median age was 469 years11

The median income for a household in the county was $48,063 and the median income for a family was $63,897 Males had a median income of $41,542 versus $27,269 for females The per capita income for the county was $27,354 About 39% of families and 67% of the population were below the poverty line, including 26% of those under age 18 and 148% of those age 65 or over14
