A new howitzer to replace the M1909 and 152-mm howitzer M1910 in the early 1930s Red Army (RKKA) 152-mm howitzer These guns were developed during World War I. The transport trolleys were short and the gun barrels were ineffective because of their low transport speeds and maximum firing ranges, however, the re-developed guns were 152-mm howitzer M1909 / 30 and 152-mm. ob s M1910 / 37 was taken into military service by the name again. We stayed in a very limited level, however, amendments and had very little effect. It was clear that a new ball was needed. The Soviets, however, were gaining experience to develop a new cannon.
The Soviets considered cooperation with Germany for this work. Germany was unable to produce weapons due to the Versailles Peace Treaty, but they were secretly developing. In this way, the Soviet artillery systems taken from the Germans, the Soviets were named 152-mm mortar M1931 (NM) and 152-mm mortar M1931 (NG). In a short time, the production of NM models started in Motovilikha Mechanical Plant (MMZ) factory. Between 1932 and 1934, however, only 8 guns were produced and then stopped. The main reason for this was that the production of cannons was too complex for the Soviets. For example, the 122-mm howitzer M1934 or 20-mm and 37-mm automatic guns could not be produced for the same reason. Arica ball carrying weight was 5,445 kg. But even these failures gave Soviet engineers useful experience.
In 1937 F. F. Petrov and his design team began working on the M-10 design at the Motovilikha Ordonat Factory. Technical drawings! It was delivered to the Artillery Division in August 1937 and the first prototype was produced on 2 November. Two guns were tried in the land trials (19 October - 25 October 1938). 302 (L / 25 calibrated groove); 303 (L / 20 caliber and groove can be made). No. 303 found very successful. Trials also revealed some construction errors of the ball. Army tests continued until the beginning of 1939 and the length of the gun barrel was extended. The ball was accepted into the army service on 29 October 1939 and was named official 152-mm howitzer model 1938. Tests were not completed yet, but continued between 22 December 1939 and 10 January 1940 ..

M-10 model In 1939, Plant No. 172 was put into production in the factory. By the end of the year, 4 pieces were produced, 685 in 1940 and 833 in 1941. One model was used in the KV-2 assault tank. The barrel of this gun was shorter and its name was the 152-mm tank howitzer M1938 (M-10T). With the end of the war, the production of the gun was stopped. The following critics are some of the reasons for this:
The M-10 was too heavy for the division but lacked enough power for the corps.
There were some problems during the production.
The defensive phase of the war lacked some features. At the end of the war, the 152-mm howitzer M1943 (D-1) of the same caliber was used in many artillery corpses. The percentage of production was growing and multiplying. In the first years of the war, when the Red Army fought an attack war, it successfully accomplished this task when the defensive force of the unknown howitzer arrived. The historian M. Svirin has also suggested the following reasons:
Cannot tractors do not have enough power to pull this cannon
Power to repair
Steel was needed for the trestle. Reducing the production of this howitzer by fulfilling the level requirements.
Organization and use
In 1939, the regiments within each artillery division had artillery shells consisting of 12 152 mm obes. These units were canceled in July 1941.
In 1944, every artillery corps belonging to the Red Army had one artillery regiment. Each regiment consisted of 5 battalions. (20 guns in total), 152-mm howitzer, 122-mm or 107-mm cannons were working with.
They were also working within the General Staff of the Reserve Forces.
1 June 1941 in the hands of RKKA 1,058 pieces of M-10 It had. Many of them were lost in the first months of the war. The M-10 was used against enemy infantry and defense lines. Concrete cannonballs were sometimes used against enemy battleships.
Many cannons were seized by Wehrmacht in the first months of the war and used against the Red Army, 15.2 cm sFH 443 (r). In addition to 45 cannons seized by the Finnish Army, 57 were purchased from Nazi Germany in 1944. Finland called it the 152 H 38 and used five heavy artillery brigades against the Russians. The Finns loved the ball, albeit a little, because there was no heavy class ball in their hands. After the war, the M-10 remained in the Finnish army service. Re-development work was planned from the 1980s, but the project was canceled. The cannon held in the army depots was removed from service until 2000.

The M-10 project gave RKKA (Red Army) artillery corps superiority in motion and firepower with 152-mm howitzers. Compared to howitzers of the same caliber, the M-10s were lighter, although they had a shorter range. For example, Nazi Germany-made 15 cm sFH 18 range 13,325 m - 1 km longer range than the D-1 - but its weight was almost double. (5,510 kg carrying weight). It was also the American 155-mm howitzer M1 (14,600 m, 5,800 kg) or the Italian-made 149-mm howitzer (14,250 m, 5,500 kg). Developed by the Germans and similar in general to the M-10 - 15 cm sFH 36 - was never put into mass production. Compared to the older French model Schneider model 1917 (11,200 m, 4,300 kg), the M-10 was still superior in weight and range.
Part-effect OF-530 projectile with 70 m width and 30 m depth It was happening. In the case of high-explosive use, it opened a crater with a diameter of 3.5 m and a depth of 1.2 m.
BP-540 HEAT shells were not used during the Great Patriotic War. 250 mm armor 90 °, 220 mm armor 60 °, 120 mm armor could penetrate with 30 ° collision angles.
